Northeastern Mental Health Center, a state Accredited Community Mental Health Center, has been serving Northeastern South Dakota since 1958. The center was started by the efforts of local citizens including Francis "Peg" Lamont. Coffee and Donut fundraisers were used to raise awareness of the need to provide local, quality mental health services. These efforts led to the establishment of the Brown County Mental Health Association in 1955. Northeastern Mental Health Center officially opened in 1958, with a staff of four, including a psychiatrist, psychologist and two support staff. Today, Northeastern Mental Health Center serves a 10 county geographic area of roughly, 11,000 square mile with a population of approximately 70,00
