Sundt Construction was founded in 1890 by Mauritz Martinsen Sundt, a Norwegian ship carpenter who immigrated to the United States. The company s early projects were homes and farms. Its first major project was the construction of the Agua Pura Dam outside Las Vegas, N.M. in 1911. Tucson became the headquarters for Sundt Construction while the operation in Las Vegas became the New Mexico Division. The company became established as one of the leading general contractors in the Southwest, able to handle diverse projects, including the top-secret community known as Los Alamos, the site of the atom bomb project.
